Life is a Song

“Good-morning Noah!!!” Drew said cheerfully as he walked into his daughters bedroom and saw her smiling up at him. He leaned down and picked his one year old baby girl up out of her crib. Looking into her eyes, he couldn’t help but think about how much his life had changed for the better since she arrived into his world. “I love you Noah, don’t you ever forget it.” Drew took his baby into his bedroom and changed her into the outfit that she’d be wearing for the day as he’d be dropping her off with her mother, Bianca DeSousa. “Daddy’s gotta go to work so you get to go spend the day with Mamma Bee.” He thought about Bianca and how much they’d been through together and was glad that they had remained great friends through it all, always putting their daughter first. While he loaded her diaper bag, Drew glanced over at the photo that was taken a few days before Christmas at the park with him, Noah, Mia, and Isabella. He walked over and picked the picture up, “My life” He said aloud as he sat the frame back down on his night stand. He couldn’t believe that this was the day that he could officially consider himself a grown up. Drew was a graduate of Degrassi Community School and had decided against going to college in lieu of staying in Toronto and working full time with his best friend, Katie Matlin’s father. He sat down at the edge of the bed, ticking his daughter’s belly, causing the little one to giggle. Drew thought about how much him and Katie had been through over the few years that they had known each other. He’d always have her back no matter what happened in life and he hoped she realized that by now. He couldn’t think her enough for helping him get the job with her father. It was easier this way, he’d stay in Toronto and wouldn’t have to move away to St. Catharines. As he thought of Katie, he couldn’t help but think of her sister, Maya. Drew actually considered Maya to be his little sister as well. He hoped that her life would continue to improve and that she’d enjoy Grade 10. I’ve always got her back too, I’ll hurt any boy who ever dares hurt her, he thought to himself. Drew stood up and walked over to his nightstand and pulled a bracelet out of the drawer, it reminded him of somebody. He also grabbed the picture out and took a glance at it, memories rushing back to his mind. “Darcy…” Drew said aloud as he thought back to all the time that they had spent together and the memories that they’d always share. He smiled at the photo as he put it back into the drawer and returned his attention to his daughter who was laying on the bed, she had fallen back to sleep. Drew walked over and grabbed the bag, then he picked Noah up off the bed and held her against his chest. All of this reflecting on his life had brought a tear to the young fathers eye. I’m so blessed, I didn’t deserve any of this. “Okay Baby Bee, let’s get you over to your mothers house so daddy can go to his first day of work.” Drew said to his sleeping daughter as he leaned in and kissed her on top of her head.

Katie played with her hands as they continued their trek up the slope. He looked down quickly, stepping over the branch just in time. “Thanks,” she said, regarding his warning. “I know it must be hard,” she said sympathetically. “What are thinking?” she questioned.

Drew walked with Katie over to a wooden bench that had been set up for the hikers who made their journey on the trail. He sat down and motioned for his best friend to do the same. At that spot, they had a very wide view of the valley below them. Drew gazed out, taking in the scenery. “I’m thinking that whatever I decide, Noah has to come first. Always. It’s been how I’ve made decisions since she was born, she always comes first and always will. It isn’t about me or what I want anymore.” He said as he turned so that he was facing Katie.

Drew took a sip from his bottle of water while Katie took a sip of hers. “Honestly, I’m not quite sure if things are getting better.” He said as he wiped some sweat off of his face. It was kind of humid, unseasonable warm for this time of the year. Drew listened with a smile on his face as Katie began to talk about how great things were going with Jake. At least one of us is happy, he thought to himself. “That’s good, Katie.” Drew said sincerely as they began to continue towards the peak of the hill.

Katie frowned. “What’s going on?” she asked, looking at him before glancing back down at the path. She took another sip of her water as she awaited his response. She gave a small smile at the thought of Jake before speaking. “I’ve never been this happy. It feels great.” she said proudly. “How are things with Mia?” she pondered.

Drew wondered how she could be so happy after everything that had happened to her, especially with the lost of her baby. However, he was thankful that some how she had managed to find happiness in all of the despair. “Branch..” Drew warned as he stepped over a big branch that was laying across the dirt trail. “It’s going great, just all this do I take the job or don’t I take the job has really stressed me out.”

“I’ve been pretty good, just stressed with all of the thinking I’ve been doing about my future.” Drew said as he kept his eyes on the trail, momentarily turning so that he could see how well Katie was hanging in there. “How have you been? I hope life’s finally starting to get better for ya, I’ve been so worried.” Drew said, referring to her recent miscarriage and all of the problems that she had been going through. He really hated seeing all the bad stuff happen to his best friend who didn’t deserve any of it.

Katie nodded. “I know how you feel. But things are getting better, right?” she asked. She hated that he had been so stressed out lately. She pulled her water bottle from the little pouch in her pack and took a sip before putting it back. “I’ve been wonderful,” she said proudly. “Things with Jake are absolutely perfect. I couldn’t ask for anything more,” she said, smiling at just the thought.

Katie nodded, smiling as she took in the crisp air. The sky was light and promising, and the area smelled wonderfully of trees and winter. “I’m glad you brought me here, it’s so nice,” she said, looking around as they began to walk on the worn trail. “So, how far are we going?” she asked, looking over to him as she awaited his answer. Being a soccer player, she had a fair amount of stamina built up, so distance was no problem for her.

“Uh, it’s like 10km so it shouldn’t be an all day event unless we just take it slow and enjoy the time we have together.” Drew said as they continued to climb the incline. “We haven’t really had the chance to talk much anymore, kinda seems like we kinda went our own ways after the breakup.” He said as he glanced over at Katie. It seemed like their lives had taken on completely different directions over the past few months. He was thankful that they still managed to salvage their friendship.

Katie nodded, shrugging her shoulders. “Hmm, that’s not so bad,” she said, continuing to walk the curved path on the mountain. “I know, I hate that.” she said, referring to the lack of the communication after their break up. It had been a tough situation, and Katie hated to even think about it. “So how have you been?” she inquired.

“You’re my best friend too, Miss Matlin. You’re one of the reasons why it would be so hard for me to leave.” Drew said with a smile on his face as they pulled up to a small gravel lot where the hikers would park their vehicles. Getting out of the car, he took a deep breath of the crisp winter air. He stretched his legs and then grabbed a bag out of the trunk of the Honda. “It’s just some stuff we might need on the trail.” Drew said as he opened the bag and grabbed his pocket knife, placing it in his pocket. “I saw a wolf the other day, you’ve got to be extremely careful.” He walked over to Katie and patted her on the back, “Don’t worry, I won’t let anything happen to you.” Drew glanced over at the trail and then back to his best friend. “So, ready to get this show on the road? Oh wait..” He reached into the bag and pulled out yet another pocket knife. “Here you go… just in case.” Drew said with a giggle. He knew she wouldn’t need to use it but still, it was the thought that counted. It might give her a little more comfort knowing that she had protection from the wildlife that roamed the hills. “If I was a bear or whatever, I’d be more afraid of Drew Torres then a pocketknife, especially if they have their eyes set on his bestie.”

Katie opened the door of the car and stepped out, taking in a deep breath. The mountain air was refreshing, bringing a smile to her face. Reaching back inside of the car, Katie grabbed her bag and swung the thin straps over her shoulders. She walked around to the back of the car to join Drew, taking the knife warily as it was handed to her. “Yeah, I’d rather us not get mauled by bears…” she said, laughing lightly. She took a few steps towards the sloped mountain, and looked up in awe. “Nature is so beautiful,” she said, sighing happily. “Ready to get this started?”

“Hopefully no bears decide to take us on cause we’d totally destroy them!” Drew said excitedly. Of course he didn’t believe that they could actually fight off bears but still, he needed to keep positive thoughts in his head. As they began to climb the trail, Drew smiled at Katie’s words. “It really is beautiful out here. Of course, I’m ready!” He glanced around, taking in all the scenery. It was nice out and the trail wasn’t crowded at all. Looking around, he could only see three others besides the two of them. “I’m really glad that you could come out here with me. I’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately and I’m happy I get to share this place with you.” Drew said softly as the trail began to curve around the slope of a hill.

“Working out again? Well that’s great, it’ll help you with the task at hand today.” Drew said, his eyes remaining focused on the road ahead. As they drove, Drew contemplated an answer to Katie’s question. Was he okay? He honestly wasn’t sure at the moment. “It’s just, I’m so torn between what to do Katie. I’m pretty sure I want to stay in Toronto but I hadn’t discovered that until recently. My family and a few friends are all I have and I don’t think I’m ready to leave all this behind.” As the cars began to become few and far between, Drew pressed a little harder on the accelerator. Soon, they were surrounded by hills on each side. “oh and to answer your question, we’re going hiking up in the hills.”

“Let’s hope so,” she said, smiling as she looked at the rolling hills that were soon surrounding them. “I understand, I just don’t know what I would do without you. You’re my best friend, Drew.” she said, giving a small smile as she looked over at her. He was the best friend that she had ever had, and had been with her through so much. She didn’t know what she would do without him, and it was something that she didn’t want to think about. “I’m excited,” she said, looking around at the scenery. “This is so beautiful.”

“You’re my best friend too, Mrs. Matlin.
